Best time of year for a wedding in Athens

Athens has a long season, and the honest answer is that most of it works. The question is what you want the day to feel like — a garden in May, the sea in June, a warm night in September — and what each of those asks of the plan.

Season by season

What each period
asks of the plan.

A garden in May, the sea in June, a warm night in September. Pick the feeling first, then plan for what comes with it.

01 · April – May

Spring

Heat Chance of rain Daylight Crowds & prices Outdoor ceremony

Green, mild and quieter than it will be for months. Gardens and estates are at their best, the light is soft, and an outdoor ceremony in the afternoon is comfortable. A shower is possible, especially in April, so a covered option matters.

What it means for the plan
  • Venues have more open dates and more room on price than in summer.
  • Orthodox Easter moves each year and can fall in April or May, and the week around it is busy. For an Orthodox ceremony, ask the parish about Lent before fixing a spring date.
  • The sea is cool; the coast is for the view rather than for swimming.
02 · June

Early summer

The month most couples aim for. Warm rather than hot, reliably dry, and the longest evenings of the year — a ceremony at seven is in full daylight, and dinner runs into dusk. The coast comes into its own; the sea is warm enough to swim.

What it means for the plan
  • The most asked-for dates of the year; book the venue a year ahead or more.
  • Photographers and the better caterers are the first to fill.
  • Guests can make a real holiday of it on either side.
03 · July – August

Peak summer

Hot, dry and bright. The afternoon is for shade and the pool; the ceremony waits for the early evening, and the party runs late because the night is warm. The coast has a breeze the centre does not. Many Athenians leave the city in August, and some places close.

What it means for the plan
  • Plan the day around the heat — a late ceremony, shade, water, and a venue with a cool room.
  • The city is quieter in August but not everything is open; the islands are at their busiest.
  • For an Orthodox ceremony, ask the parish before fixing an August date; the church calendar keeps part of the month.
04 · September – early October

Early autumn

Summer without the edge. The sea is at its warmest, the evenings are still mild, and the light turns gold earlier. Many couples who plan for June and find it booked land here and prefer it.

What it means for the plan
  • Nearly as popular as June with vendors and venues; book early.
  • The evenings shorten through the period; a ceremony at seven in late September is at dusk.
  • The first rain of the autumn usually arrives in October; a plan B matters again.
05 · Late October – March

Late autumn & winter

Mild by northern standards, green, and quiet. This is the season for an indoor wedding in the city — a neoclassical house, a hotel, a long dinner — with the days around it spent in museums and tavernas rather than on the beach.

What it means for the plan
  • Venues have their pick of dates and the most room on price.
  • Rain is likely enough that the ceremony should be planned indoors, with outside as the bonus.
  • Flights are cheaper and easier for guests; the coast is largely closed for the season.

different on the water.

Explore Athens
In summer

The difference is the breeze.

The coast is a few degrees kinder in the afternoon and noticeably so at night, and the sea is the plan for the day after. The centre holds the heat into the evening, which is fine for a rooftop at nine and hard on a courtyard at five.

In spring and autumn

The difference is the risk.

A shower on the coast means a covered terrace; a shower in the city means the room you were always going to eat in. If the date is April or late October, the city is the safer bet for an outdoor plan with a fallback.

Questions

Asked often.
Answered plainly.

01 What is the most popular month for weddings in Athens?

June and September, for the same reasons — warm, dry, long evenings, and a sea warm enough to swim in. Both fill early. May and early October are the quieter alternatives with most of the same weather.

02 Is August too hot for a wedding in Athens?

Not too hot, but hot enough to plan around. A ceremony in the early evening, shade and water in the afternoon, and a coastal venue for the breeze all make August work. Many Greek weddings happen in August; almost none of them start at four.

03 Can we have an outdoor wedding in Athens in winter?

You can plan for it, but not depend on it. Winter is mild and often sunny, and it is also when most of the year's rain falls. A city venue with a beautiful room and a terrace for the bonus of a clear evening is the way to do it.

04 When is the wedding season on the Athens Riviera?

Roughly May to October, with the beach clubs and seaside venues opening for the summer and closing after it. Outside that window the coast is quiet and many venues are shut; the city carries the winter.
